If you’ve been involved in grassroots football or any other sport over the last few weeks then you’ll have felt the chill starting to bite.

Autumn is the season when the midlayer really comes into it’s own. Just warm enough to keep away the cold during training, but not to the point where you’re sweating buckets 10 minutes in.

Whether you’re shopping for a team order or just for your own training wardrobe. We’re going to walk you through the 5 best midlayers from our big 4 brands. Nike, adidas, Puma and Joma. But before that…

Midlayer-Edit-1

What is a Midlayer?

A midlayer is a versatile training top, typically worn over a tee. Imagine a hybrid of performance training top, tracksuit jacket and sweatshirt.

They are normally made from lightweight and stretchy material which is just enough to keep you warm whilst not overheating you. Ideal for those chilly winter training sessions or under an outer jacket whilst watching from the sideline.

Train, play, sleep, repeat. The Nike Academy Pro Midlayer is the perfect extra layer for training. Designed using lightweight, stretchy Dri-FIT material which hugs close to the body for warmth without restriction of movement.

Probably the most eye-catching of our favourite midlayers on the design front. The famous swoosh sits proudly on the left arm with “NIKE” text across the back. There are four colourways to choose from, all of which feature a stylish quarter length zip. Women’s fit version also available.

Here is adidas’s contribution to the midlayer genre from the popular Condivo 20 range. It’s made using 100% recycled polyester to reduce waste and emissions. So you can train in style whilst knowing you’re doing your bit for the planet. A weight off your shoulders.

More understated in it’s styling but comes complete with those familiar three stripes down the lower arm. Extra ventilation within the sleeves will keep you cool when training hots up. Or you can pull down the quarter zip for a breather.

We were over the moon to welcome sportswear giants Puma to our list of brands this summer. This midlayer is a prime example of why we were so excited. Puma combine cutting edge technology with innovative design, whilst still being very affordable to grassroots budgets.

The Cup Core Midlayer features a stylish embossed graphic which provides a unique look. Puma DryCELL material keeps you dry and comfortable whilst you put the miles in on the training pitch. Mesh panels on the back and sides of the garment offer breathability.

If you’re not familiar with Joma as a brand then it’s about time that you were. They offer affordable yet high quality sportswear with a dash of Spanish flair for good measure.

Their ¼ zip midlayer encapsulates simple understated style and at less than £15 a pop you can’t go wrong. It’s available in five colourways to cater for a range of club colours. All that’s missing from this training top is your club logo.

If you think that your team would look good in the Nike swoosh but are working to a tight budget then the Nike Park Range was made for you.

The Park 20 Crew Top embodies everything the range is about. It’s simple yet effective design is a theme that runs throughout the entire collection. Don’t be fooled by the minimalism though. This training top is engineered to perfection with Dri-Fit material to keep you cool and dry.
